I premiered a dance film

As part of the Fieldwork session this semester, I wanted to create a short dance film taking advantage of some of the incredible greenery in Washington, DC. I worked closely with my friend Hannah Church to create the choreography and then we took to the forest to shoot it. I’m really proud of the final product which I’ll be showing at Dance Place!

Phototropism describes an organism’s growth in response to light stimulus. Seen in plants and some species of fungi, positive phototropism is on display any time your house plants lean recklessly out of their pots towards the sun. While the trend of all life on earth is turning towards survival, towards the light, the complex human organism self-sabotages and confuses this seemingly universal organizing principle, the impulse to thrive. The titular organism of Phototrope struggles to escape the negative entropy of their own internal state, against the backdrop of nature’s brutal efficiency.

I’m hoping to do more short films like this in the future. Stay tuned!
